This self-paced course is an introduction to acute care practice from vital sign interpretation and chart review to exercise prescription for patients recovering from critical illness. Students will focus on applying physiological principles unique to acutely ill populations in developing an exercise program that facilitates healing and reduces hospital readmission. There will be two synchronous sessions associated with this course.

Course Objectives/Outcomes

  • Interpret exercise response to structure an exercise program to optimize patient outcomes
  • Apply clinical reasoning skills related to chart review and line management in a patient case scenario
  • Relate the examination, evaluation and interventions pertinent to individuals with Post Intensive Care Syndrome
  • Differentiate inpatients who require rehab versus mobility in patient cases
  • Identify roles that PT can also serve in the ED to limit admissions
  • Determine discharge disposition and appropriate discharge exercise prescription
