This course is designed to improve the participant’s understanding and practice in the area of trauma informed care and the ability to establish and maintain a good therapeutic alliance with patients regardless of their history or trauma background. Participants in the course will receive an overview of trauma, trauma informed care, and practical tips for establishing and maintaining a therapeutic alliance that can enhance and promote optimal patient outcomes.

Course Objectives:

  • Name and define 5 common trauma responses
  • Define at least two protective mechanisms behind trauma responses
  • List at least two options for interactions with individuals who are experiencing a trauma response during care
  • Identify at least two strategies for how to screen for a history of a trauma and the impact this may have on the patient’s care
  • Describe at least three best practices to establish and maintain optimal therapeutic alliance
