    Hours: 23

This weekend intensive lab focuses on the clinical reasoning and hands-on skill development necessary to effectively integrate manual physical therapy examination and intervention techniques into the clinical management. Classification systems, outcomes assessment tools, and the application of diagnostic imaging are discussed as components of the diagnostic process within the framework of evidence-based practice.

Upon completion of this course, a successful learner will be able to:

    1. Identify and perform key elements of the upper extremity subjective and objective clinical examination, with particular emphasis on active and passive motion testing with overpressure, shoulder, elbow and wrist differential testing, and special tests.
    2. Synthesize and analyze data from the upper extremity clinical examination based on signs and symptoms and treatment-based classifications.
    3. Determine a diagnosis and use sound clinical reasoning and treatment-based classifications and/or clinical practice guidelines to guide patient/client management.
    4. Engage in the diagnostic process to establish differential diagnoses across systems & across the life span.
    5. Utilize a consistent clinical process to effectively screen for systemic disease and nonmusculoskeletal pathology in patients with upper extremity pain.
    6. Justify the selection of manual therapy techniques or integrated exercise using clinical reasoning and application of current best evidence.
    7. Perform selected upper extremity manipulation and mobilization techniques in patients with upper extremity pain or dysfunction.

Upon completion of this course, a successful learner will be able to:

    1. Perform key elements of an upper quarter screening exam.
    2. Demonstrate key examination tests and measures for the upper quarter.
    3. Analyze the examination results and select the best intervention using a case-based example.
    4. Perform key treatment techniques for the upper quarter.

This course builds upon a physical therapist’s prior knowledge of the management of those with upper extremity disorders providing learners with the skills necessary to optimize outcome and enhance the quality of care for those with upper extremity related disorders.

Upon completing this course, you will be able to:

    1. Synthesize foundational knowledge of anatomy and physiology, movement science, pathology/pathophysiology, pain science, with current orthopedic physical therapy theory and evidenced informed practice.
    2. Integrate a systematic person-centered clinical reasoning and decision-making process with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) model.
    3. Reflect on one’s ability to conduct a subjective examination that guides clinical decision making, builds a therapeutic alliance, and facilitates optimal outcome.
    4. Reflect on one’s ability to conduct a physical examination that guides further clinical decisions.
    5. Develop an inclusive, person-centered, effective, plan of care guided by the patient interview and physical examination.
    6. Evaluate intervention provided by interpreting clinical outcomes appropriately and adjusting a plan of care accordingly.
    7. Reflect upon clinical outcomes, knowledge, current expertise as a mechanism to guide further professional growth.
