This course, is designed to build upon foundational knowledge of cardiopulmonary anatomy, physiology, general and specific pathophysiology to allow the physical therapists to gain competency in the management of functional, activity, and participation limitations as a result of cardiopulmonary disease.

Course Objectives/Outcomes

By the end of the course, a successful learner will be able to:

  • Recognize and understand normal age-related changes to the cardiovascular/pulmonary system and how they affect exercise capacity and response to activity in the older adult.
  • Understand the pathophysiology and clinical implications of common cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions encountered in the older adult.
  • Describe the components of examination and assessment of a patient with cardiovascular or pulmonary disease.
  • Recognize cardiovascular and respiratory pharmaceutical interventions and understand their clinical implications.
  • Interpret common laboratory and diagnostic tests when performing a medical chart review.
  • Modify exercise-based treatments to account for normal effects of aging as well as cardiovascular and pulmonary pathophysiology in the older adult.
  • Appreciate the importance and understand the structure of a cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation program.
  • List interventional steps that may be taken to prevent onset or future exacerbation of cardiovascular and pulmonary disease.
