This course, is designed to build upon foundational knowledge of cardiopulmonary anatomy, physiology, general and specific pathophysiology to allow the physical therapists to gain competency in the management of functional, activity, and participation limitations as a result of cardiopulmonary disease.

Course Objectives/Outcomes

By the end of the course, a successful learner will be able to:

  • Examine the implications of physiological aging on the cardiopulmonary system
  • Appraise the value of lab values, EKG results, and other diagnostic outcomes on the physical and occupational therapy plan of care
  • Complete an evaluation for an older adult patient with various cardiopulmonary conditions to address the patient’s symptoms and goals
  • Apply basic and advanced principles of exercise physiologic and intervention for older adult patients with cardiopulmonary conditions/diseases
  • Articulate the importance of interprofessional collaboration and communication when managing patients with cardiopulmonary conditions to promote best rehabilitation outcomes
  • Explain the impact that both post-intensive care syndrome and COVID-19 have had on the older adult patient population as well as the impact of these conditions on the traditional rehabilitation process
