This course is designed to educate clinicians to various diagnostic imaging techniques used to evaluate a variety of neuro-musculoskeletal pathologies. It also includes broad recognition of constitutional symptoms and signs, the determination of the systems most likely affected, and the process of making appropriate referrals to other health care providers. Emphasis will be on the Musculoskeletal System and Orthopedic Radiology. At the clinical level, it is essential for students to fully understand the different imaging modalities used to make a diagnosis and treat various conditions. This includes understanding the indications for an imaging study, the limitations of the study, and how to interpret it.

By the end of the course, a successful learner will be able to:

  • Determine their current state practice guidelines around musculoskeletal imaging and understand their role in using imaging as a physical therapist.
  • Compare and contrast the clinical capabilities, indications, and limitations of plain film radiographs, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and diagnostic ultrasound.
  • Justify the need for imaging for various musculoskeletal conditions using the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria, clinical prediction rules, published clinical practice guidelines, or clinical indicators as discussed in this course.
  • Appropriately interpret musculoskeletal diagnostic imaging of the extremities for radiographs, MRI, and CT using systematic evaluation ABCs methodologies.
  • Appropriately interpret musculoskeletal diagnostic imaging of the spine for radiographs, MRI, and CT using systematic evaluation ABCs methodologies
  • Confidently discuss imaging findings with other health care professionals.
