Working from the premise that Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE) is not a stand a stand-alone treatment, this course describes evidence-based, effective interventions that often accompany PNE in the clinic for patients experiencing chronic and/or complex pain states.  It builds off the introductory treatment information regarding the “pluses” of PNE(+) introduced in Therapeutic Neuroscience Education (TNE).   Each week, one of the “plus” treatments is explored in detail, with attention given to the endogenous mechanisms by which the intervention is proposed to work, neuro-endocrine-immune aspects of the intervention, trends and future prospects related to the topic area, and clinical application.

By the end of the course, a successful learner will be able to:

  • Describe endogenous mechanisms by which the variety of interventions described in PNEF 6410 improve pain and function in individuals with pain.
  • Give examples of ways in which PNE plus interventions can positively impact the neuro-endocrine-immune system a promote improvement in pain and function by the interventions described.
  • Practice at least one new  “PNE Plus” skill with a patient in preparation to discuss the experience with peers during the weekend intensive associated with PNEF 6410.
  • Apply introductory skills in those “PNE Plus” topic areas of interest which are within the scope of practice for individual fellowship candidates as demonstrated via treatment vignette recordings.
  • Formulate rationale for the use of interventions beyond the practitioner’s current “tool-box” and/or scope of practice, and guide patients in their pursuit of individualized strategies to treat pain, including making appropriate referrals as necessary.
