This 2-week course is a tour of the educational background, professional responsibilities, recommended characteristics, scopes of practice including licensure practices/regulations of common members of the sports medicine team. These members include but are not limited to the team physician, certified athletic trainer, sports physical therapist, sports nutritionist, strength & conditioning coach, and the sports psychologist. The learning activities are designed to allow reflective assessment that facilitates your future as a Sports Physical Therapist in your local community, state and professional organization. This course is designed to allow you to explore the general background of each of the Sports medicine team members and apply this knowledge to your own local area and state practice act. It guides your investigation into your state license, practice act, legislation that will define your scope of practice and guide the application of this knowledge into common Sports PT ethical dilemmas where you currently live and practice. It will also facilitate your look into the future re: continued professional development, outcomes, attainment and maintenance of board certification, and lifelong learning.

By the end of the course, a successful learner will be able to:

  • Analyze the educational background and published scope of practice of the members of your local sports medicine team and understand your own role as an active and productive member of this team. 
  • Analyze and apply the state’s legal considerations including licensure and state practice acts of the sports physical therapist and the board-certified sports physical therapist in the state that you practice. 
  • Examine and plan your ABPTS board certification initial application process and continued competence (MOSC) processes. 
  • Examine, identify, and plan your next, NEXT step (plan of action as a Sports Physical Therapist who remains an evidence- based practitioner, a lifelong learner, and an active member of the sports medicine team and profession. 
  • Apply ethical considerations to different aspects of sports physical therapy.
