For: All eligible candidates for the Fellowship in Pain Science

This two-day, on-site lab course is designed to synthesize and apply the principles and skills obtained throughout the Pain Science Fellowship.  By the time learners enroll in this final course of the program, they will possess advanced knowledge and technical skills in the evidence-based management of individuals with complex and/or chronic pain.  At the course, they will demonstrate this knowledge through a variety of interactive tasks, presentations, and rapid-fire question/answer sessions.  Participants can expect to be challenged in engaging and meaningful ways as some of the most complex issues surrounding the care of patients with chronic pain are explored, including the opioid crisis, community and peer education, creating meaningful inter-disciplinary relationships, political advocacy, and resource allocation.  Participants will also be expected to present their scholarly projects, highlighting the implementation of fellowship-level knowledge in their various studies and service projects. It is expected that by the conclusion of this course, participants will have a solid grasp of their role moving forward in health care and society at large as part of the solution to the chronic pain epidemic that has gripped our world.

The course will include viewing of expert-level clinician/patient interaction with large group discussion and analysis, topical large and small group discussions, practical application, role play activities, presentations by participants, case-based group problem-solving projects, personal reflection and a call to action.  The course will have a student to faculty ratio of no greater than 18:1 (16:1 in California).  An online post-test and on-site skill assessment are used to reinforce course objectives and assess learning.

By the end of the course, a successful learner will be able to:

  • Critically analyze and assess the performance of a master clinician in the evaluation, clinical decision making and treatment of a patient with a complex pain presentation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to present scholarly work in a succinct yet meaningful way, elaborate on their work and articulate the contribution of PSF-based knowledge to their project.
  • Formulate questions to elucidate the deeper implications of scholarly work completed by peers, as well as provide feedback and suggestions to extend the reach of that work.
  • Provide accurate answers and/or demonstrations of clinical application tasks covering the fundamental precepts of pain science in an impromptu / rapid-fire oral exam format.
  • Generate a preliminary, multi-faceted plan to address a high-level challenge facing society and health care providers in the realm of education, policy, resource allocation, and/or education.
  • Articulate a personal plan for integrating and multiplying the knowledge and skills obtained in the Pain Sciences Fellowship to foster professional growth, leadership, community service and advancement of pain sciences for the betterment of society.
