This course is designed to improve the participant’s understanding of the evolution and processes that underlie the practice of hyperbaric medicine. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) treatment was first used to combat illnesses related decompression and altitude sickness. The participants will then gain an introductory understanding of HBOT and how this cutting-edge treatment can ameliorate tissue damage caused by COVID-19, particularly when used in conjunction with other therapies as holistic treatment.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, a successful learner will be able to:

  • Define hyperbaric medicine, including the mechanisms that drive this approach to treatment
  • Explain the timeline for the evolution of hyperbaric medicine, from root philosophies to current practice
  • Outline the key processes involved in current hyperbaric medicine
  • Determine how Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1 Alpha (HIF-1α) influences tissue healing
  • Describe the Hyperoxic-Hypoxic Paradox as it relates to tissue healing
  • List possible disease conditions that would benefit from HBOT
