This course is designed to ensure the participant’s understanding and application of acute management of injury and illness (AMII). It provides the participant with the current, evidence-informed knowledge and skills necessary to respond as an emergency medical responder (EMR) to help sustain life, reduce pain, and minimize the consequences of sudden injury or illness until resolution, stabilization, and/or more advanced medical personnel arrive on-scene to continue management.

By the end of the course, a successful learner will be able to:

  • Incorporate evidence-based practice in the management of patients/clients with acute athletic injury or illness. 
  • Participate in the design and implementation of decision-making guidelines (Emergency Action Plans, EAP) that include management of acute, athletic injury and illness. 
  • Demonstrate sound clinical decision-making skills including clinical reasoning, clinical judgement, and reflective practice in the management of acute injury or illness. 
  • Examine patients/clients by completing an evidence-based primary assessment, secondary assessment, focused and detailed physical examination. 
  • Analyze data from primary assessment, secondary assessment, focused and detailed physical examination to make clinical judgements regarding appropriate patient/client management and disposition.
  • Become a productive member of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and sports medicine team in the assessment and management of athletic injury and illness.
