This four-week self-paced, online course is designed to improve knowledge regarding the importance of case reports/series in the medical literature and provides the foundation of the skill-set needed as Fellows-in-Training work towards completing their own original case report or case series. This course overviews the role of case reports in research and clinical practice. It also looks at the basic components for consideration before, during, and after the writing and publishing process. Learning the process of producing a meaningful case report along with the ability to critically appraise other published reports will improve the student’s foundational knowledge as an evidence-based clinicianIn addition, learners will complete the Good Clinical Practice course withing RES 6110, providing them with the certification required of most Institutional Review Boards in order to participate in research on human subjects. 

By the end of the course, a successful learner will be able to:

  •  Possess the necessary legal and practical tools (GCP Certificate) to participate in human research. 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the ethics and regulations surrounding research on human subjects.
  • Understand the value of writing case reports as a key component in scholarly communication.
  • Develop the basic skills of writing a case report or case series suitable for peer review publication.
  • Recognize key components of the peer review process toward achieving and accepted publication.
