This course covers evidence-based approaches to optimize health and wellness in the older adults. It will discuss issues regarding readiness of an individual to change behaviors related to health promotion, and interventions to optimize adherence to exercise or other health behaviors to support healthy aging.

Course Outcomes

By the end of the course, a successful participant will be able to: 

  • Assess evidence-based theories of behavior change in older adults  
  • Identify specific barriers and facilitators to health promotion and illness prevention in older adults  
  • Demonstrate clinical behaviors that optimize adherence to exercise and/or healthy lifestyle choices   
  • Differentiate strategies at multiple levels with their older adult patients to promote aging in place to allow the older adult to live as independently, and as safely, as possible  
  • Determine a specific, patient-focused wellness program for a case scenario that can be used as a template and adapted for other patients within their clinical practice  
  • Explain how society’s views on aging impact health and wellness of the older adult population including access to services, referral to healthcare providers, self-image
