For: PT, OT, ATC, DC, DO

This course has modules in evidence-based practice (EBP), safety and risks with manual therapy, and clinical reasoning for manual therapy. In the EBP module, there is focus on understanding what EBP is and the barriers for use as well as critical appraisal of the literature to ensure that best practices are used in clinical practice. Since manual therapy is not without risk, the second module examines the current understanding of risk and risk assessment and mitigation. The last module looks at application of the SINSS module and clinical reasoning for decision making of manual therapy interventions.

By the end of the course, a successful learner will be able to:

  • Define EBP and discuss its philosophy and fundamental principles.
  • Have a basic understanding of critical appraisal of the literature and why this is necessary.
  • Examine risk involved with manual therapy interventions.
  • Utilize clinical reasoning to plan for the examination and vigor of treatment.
  • Describe joint kinematics in the cervical and lumbar spine with an understanding of the limitations in these descriptions.
