Promoting positive health behaviors in coping strategies are important elements of lifestyle medicine and integrative behavioral health. Some coping options are risky and significantly detrimental to health. Assisting clients to both understand and overcome the use of risky substances is the focus in this course. This is a vast and complex topic, and this will serve as an introduction and starting point to integrate into a practice of lifestyle medicine and integrative behavioral health. Topics included: tobacco, opioids, CBD, medical marijuana, alcohol, nutrition, and exercise. A healthy approach to exercise and cognitive behavior therapy will be presented as alternatives to maladaptive coping strategies.

By the end of the course, a successful learner will be able to:

  • Cite scientific evidence for tobacco cessation benefits & options including USPHS guidelines.
  • Define maladaptive coping and identify specific unhelpful coping techniques that impact lifestyle-related diseases and illness/injury recovery.
  • Describe impact of medical marijuana, CBD, and opioids on lifestyle related diseases and pain.
  • Compare and contrast use of exercise, risky behaviors, pharmaceuticals, and other forms of interventions for lifestyle related disease and pain.
  • List diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders and provide screening options for patients with substance use disorders.
  • Describe and cite evidence supporting collaborative chronic care models and generate appropriate referrals and community resources.
