The Foundational Geriatric Certification Program provides rehabilitation professionals with the basic skills required to manage the complex and unique needs of the older adult population. Topics covered in this level include online didactic coursework related to interprofessional management of older adults in health care, exercise prescription, and health promotion/wellness dedicated to providing the most current information regarding balance and falls management as well as orthopedic considerations for the older adult. Ideal for the clinician that sees a consistent older adult population, but isn’t sure if the geriatric specialty route is for them, this program will help you feel more confident in your clinical interactions with older adults. This certification is the only one of its kind as you will learn from an interdisciplinary team of physical therapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, and other qualified professionals with clinical and research backgrounds in managing older adult needs.

Outcomes

At the end of the Evidence in Motion Geriatric Certification Program, a successful learner will be able to:

  • Distinguish and summarize the difference between pathological and physiological aging patterns as they impact older adult patients/clients in rehabilitation settings.
  • Evaluate the role of the physical and occupational therapist on the interprofessional healthcare team in providing optimal management of the needs of older adult patients/clients.
  • Appraise and apply evidence-informed practices to a variety of patient conditions and clinical settings to promote patient/client outcomes and provide optimal care environments for the older adult population.
  • Advocate for the healthcare needs, elimination of barriers, and access to services for older adult patients/clients on a personal, clinical, and community level.
