This self-paced online course explores the relationship between sleep and pain. Learners investigate the anatomy of sleep, role of neurotransmitters and the impact of sleep deprivation on human health and performance. Topics considered include expand on how optimal sleep health contributes to optimal immune health, pain modulation, mental health, and tissue healing. As a result of this learning experience, clinicians gain the tools to screen patients for sleep disorders and the need for specialist referral and strategies to promote healthy sleep behaviors.

Course Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the successful learner will be able to:

  • Recognize the relationship between sleep and pain.
  • Discuss the anatomy and architecture of sleep.
  • Identify the role of neurotransmitters in sleep.
  • List steps for screening patients for possible referral to sleep specialists or for further assessment using polysomnography.
  • Describe ways to promote sleep health.
