This course will provide the physical therapist assistant with knowledge and skills in managing adults with a variety of lower quarter musculoskeletal conditions that impact their movement and function. Musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction is a leading cause of disability in adults.  Lower quarter conditions such as lumbar spinal stenosis or knee osteoarthritis frequently result in decreased fitness levels and increase risk of developing cardiovascular conditions.  This course will focus on evidence‐based treatments to address these problems, including soft tissue mobilization, lifestyle modifications, and exercise management strategies for adults.

By the end of the course, a successful learner will be able to:

  • Analyze the different elements of patient/client management for the adult with selected musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Demonstrate appropriate manual and exercise therapy for older adults with selected lower quarter musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Discuss appropriate exercise dosing and progression for various lower quarter post-operative procedures.
  • Appraise the role of the physical therapist and physical therapy assistant in the prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system.
