This course is available as a standalone CE course or as an elective for our new Advanced Practice Certification.

This self-paced online course explores the relationship between nutrition and pain. Learners investigate common dietary patterns’ role in inflammation and discuss the macronutrients of an anti- inflammatory diet. Additionally, students will be able to identify possible application of supplements in the treatment of pain and describe holistic considerations surrounding nutrition and the person. As a result of this learning experience, clinicians gain the tools to consider nutrition education as element of pain care.

Course Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the successful learner will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of nutrition as a component of health Identify shortcomings of the Standard American Diet.
  • Identify how dietary patterns can impact risk of pain Identify how inflammation is mediated by dietary intake.
  • Describe the relationship between the gut and the brain.
  • Describe the relationship of the gut microbiome with the individual.
  • Describe ways in which microbiota can impact pain Identify the common factor between pain, obesity and depression.
  • Describe the macronutrient components of an anti-inflammatory diet.
  • List components of traditional diets that have anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Describe the features of common diet plans and link diet plans to inflammation.
  • Describe the safety considerations related to supplement use and identify possible applications of supplements in the treatment of pain.
  • Describe the holistic considerations surrounding nutrition and the person.
