Here is a post from another blog I regularly read regarding a recently published paper in Health Affairs. The gist of the findings is that although the U.S healthcare system performs well in highly specialized areas (due to our fascination with expensive tecnology), we fail quite misearably when it comes to coordinating care throughout the spectrum. In other words, we have major problems in primary care. Compared to Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, the UK, the U.S. ranks worst in the number of medical errors, access to primary care, providing care after hours, and access due to out of pocket expenses. Given that we have the most expensive healthcare system in the world, we should expect more out of our system. Opportunistic individuals see opportunity wherever there are problems. How will we as a health care profession respond?
