She is always excited to learn with and from all humans and is ready to help us navigate the conference.
The day before the conference, you will be sent a Zoom link to use when joining the conference. The sessions will be live between 9 AM – 1 PM CST daily. We encourage all participants to attend as many live course sessions as possible to enrich their learning experience. Recognizing that conflicts will occur, all course sessions will be recorded and available in your Canvas account for 60 days.
9:00 – 10:00 AM CST EIM Introductory Keynote Address – Lisa VanHoose
10:00 – 11:00 AM CST Expectations for Diversity in Programmatic Accreditation – Lisa Finnegan
11:00 AM – 1:00 PM CST Components of an Effective Lesson – Michelle VanSlate
The components of an effective lesson provide the framework for instructional objectives, the reasoning behind instructional content, and the instructional design principles that guide course content development. The goal is to create engaging lessons that absorb the learner into the material. Course design is the process and methodology of creating quality learning environments and experiences for students and includes these critical elements:
In this course design process, we will be introducing a tool that will aid faculty in the development of hybrid courses within their learning management system (LMS).
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM CST Asynchronous Lectures, Activities and Assignments – Andrea Jones-Pierre and Brian Reynard
Many of today’s students have spent their lives exposed to the internet, so they have a sophisticated sense of what quality content delivery looks and sounds like. Creating a welcoming and thoughtful online presentation within a learning management system is similar to structuring an ideal physical classroom space. We want to create a structured digital environment to help learners focus on the task at hand: efficiently absorbing content.
In this session, we will present tips that will help make your asynchronous presentations polished and dynamic. Topics will include best practices for preparing and recording video lectures, knowledge checks, embedding media into Canvas, and the usage of Guiding Questions.
10 AM – 12 PM CST Synchronous/Virtual Class Sessions – Jasmine Alcoser
Synchronous teaching allows online students to interact with an instructor and peers in real time through a visual and interactive interface. To run a smooth and successful session, instructors and students need to come to the sync session prepared to advance in their teaching and learning. So how do we guide these virtual sessions? How can we ensure this valuable time spent with students is maximized while keeping them actively and cognitively engaged? In this session, we will build off our asynchronous session to develop a purposeful and well planned lesson. We will focus on encouraging students to become “experts” on a specific topic and opening the opportunity for a deeper whole class discussion. Additionally, we will look at how synchronous sessions allow for opportunities to check student comprehension in real time, giving instructors the ability to give their students direct guidance on their performance instantly.
In this session, you will:
Identifying different tools to check for student comprehension and determining the best ways to address student misconceptions in real time.
9 – 11 AM CST Applying Technology To Achieve Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition (SAMR) & Share-out – Jessica Hendricks
To wrap up our mini conference, we will spend our time together gathering key takeaways to transform them into a live lesson from beginning to end:
