Occupational therapy practitioners (OTP) are uniquely trained to treat the various factors that contribute to the frequency, intensity, and functional impact of headache conditions and their associated symptoms.

Despite this, many people who experience persistent headaches miss out on access to this valuable clinical service. This talk will focus on strategies every OTP can apply to this population, specialty skills and training that can take treatment to the next level, as well as language that can be used to help advocate for OT in this under-represented clinical area.

This course is designed to introduce occupational therapy practitioners to the specialized care needs of the geriatric population experiencing various neurological conditions. Participants will explore the unique challenges faced by older adults and will learn interventions that can empower individuals to maintain independence, engage in meaningful activities, and live fulfilling lives as they age. Participants will develop the foundational knowledge to deliver client-centered occupational therapy services that promote independence, well-being, and purposeful living for older adults with neurological conditions.

    Session Details:

For decades research has validated a family centered approach to pediatric therapies. As CMS expands billing codes for caregiver education without the patient present, pediatric providers have a unique opportunity to reexamine the implementation of family centered care. Additional considerations for neurodiversity and trauma within the immediate family system.

This content will explore integration of a family/caregiver centered practice from intake, to evaluation, treatment, and discharge. Participants will be provided with examples of intake paperwork, prompts for building a therapeutic relationship, a framework for understanding when to refer other family members for their own individualized therapy.

  • Faculty: Megan Doyle

    Session Details:

Pain neuroscience education (PNE) initially emerged from a need to better treat chronic pain and has more traditionally been incorporated in outpatient rehab settings. However, an increasing body of research demonstrates that an individual’s understanding of pain and personalized lifestyle factors directly correlate with the potential transition to chronic pain after an acute pain event.

Therefore, there is a need for pain education to move “upstream” to when an individual has a surgical intervention or other acute pain experience that occurs during an inpatient admission and to take a proactive and preventative approach to pain care. This presentation will focus on integrating pain neuroscience education and “PNE+” interventions into these settings with an emphasis on treatment of acute pain using the biopsychosocial model and the holistic scope of occupational therapy for best outcomes.

    Session Details:

Developing skills in Motivational Interviewing encourages a person-centered approach when working with patients from a biopsychosocial perspective. This workshop will explore the Spirit, Principles, and Primary Skills of Motivational Interviewing. We will discuss the importance of meeting patients where they are, allowing them to choose to make changes in their behaviors.

Balancing the desire to help and direct them with the skills to facilitate the change process within them is key to successful treatment. MI is a simple concept, but choosing to purposefully use this approach takes deliberate practice.
