Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common reasons people seek health care services and continues
to be a problem for which treatment is controversial and most interventions demonstrate limited or no
positve effect (especially high-tech and invasive procedures).
Manipulation of the lumbopelvic region is an intervention that is low-risk, non-invasive and relatively easy to administer. Numerous high-quality studies have repeatedly shown that manipulation of the lumbopelvic region, when performed on the right patient, offers significant improvement in patient oriented outcomes.
Who might the "right" patients be? Patients who test positive for selected findings of the historical and physical exam. These patients should receive a combination of lumbopelvic manipulation and exercise very early in their episode (the first two weeks) in order to achieve optimal outcomes and avoid complicating issues associated with LBP.
This app provides all the information associated with the lumbopelvic manipulation intervention category of a treatment based classification system to include: the variables that increase a patient's chance of success, which questions to ask, which procedures to perform in the examination, and how to perform the lumbar manipulation. Input different variables into the equation and see the post-test probability of success with manipulation. There are embedded videos, written instructions, and references with links to PUBMed that support all the information presented.
All the tools to understand and use the Lumbar Manipulation Clinical Prediction Rule associated with the Manipulation Treatment Based Classification System are presented here.
